Kate Hinderer:
The Writing Process for
Emerald Isle

Hey, I’m author Kate Hinderer and I’m lucky enough to be guest posting for the day as part of the blog book tour for EMERALD ISLE. This book is part paranormal, part contemporary fiction. It has adventure, romance, suspense and a whole lot of salty water.
(The book can be found on Amazon, Barnes & Noble, and Smashwords.)

From what I can tell, the writing process is different for each author. For me, it is a serious act of the will. When I am writing for fun, crafting stories that no one but my family will ever read, I don’t write in order. I’ll write the scenes I like, the ones I see in my head when the idea first formed, but it is a very disjointed process.

When I’m writing a book I force myself to go in order, to flesh out each and every scene without jumping ahead to the one I really want to write. I find this helps the entire story come to life, even if it’s painful to get through the parts that are more boring but still necessary.

I also like to punch out as much of the story in the first few weeks as possible. For this one, I spent a lot time while attending a three-week conference writing the first 140 pages. I was a machine, cranking out the entire first half. And then, when my pseudo-vacation was over it took me another five months to write the second half of the book.

And even before the writing process begins I let the characters and story line percolate in my head for weeks, if not months. The Emerald Isle was an idea for more than two years before the first words were even written. As the ideas continue to swirl, I’ll longhand write out character descriptions, settings and scenes. The notebook is a mess of thoughts and ideas with no real order. I don’t even refer to them much in the writing process but it helps to get things worked out with a pencil and paper.

Funny thing with all of this is when I first started writing, I thought for sure being an author was just a matter of opening a google document and writing. Now, looking back over the last 14 months as this book took shape, I realize a lot more goes into the process that fingers on a keyboard.

I hope you enjoy  EMERALD ISLE and fall in love with the characters as much as I did while writing the story.
