One of THE MOST knowledgeable fairy tale experts out there is author Alethea Kontis. She mashes up fairy tales in her Woodcutter Sisters series like there's no tomorrow. She brings up the coolest little details in her YouTube Fairy Tale Rant Series. She talks about awesome fairy tale things all the time on social media. I LOVE HER!!!

Today, Althea has allowed me to re-post her FANTASTIC Fairy Tale Rant on--you guessed it--Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs--to celebrate A Week of Snow White.

Annnnnd we're going to be talking about the Snow White scene in her fairy tale mash-up novel ENCHANTED (Its primary focus is The Princess and the Frog).

Snow White Fairy Tale Rant

About that Snow White-Inspired Scene in ENCHANTED...

As Alethea Kontis will tell you in the above video, we're talking about Chapter Five. I noticed the references right away, but readers not as familiar with Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs might not have registered what was going on.

(But let's face it. We're ALL going to be Snow White experts at the end of A Week of Snow White, am I right!?)

As I mentioned in our Snow White Cram Session the other day, there were THREE TIMES the Stepmother tricked Snow into a cursed "death." THREE.

Alethea Kontis uses all three encounters in ENCHANTED--but in a very different, blink-and-you-miss-it way!

After Sunday Woodcutter's froggy friend (I'd say enchanted prince, but he IS a frog at the time...and she doesn't know he's a prince, so...) gives her a golden bauble, Sunday goes to Market with her brother Trix and her sister Friday.

While there, Sunday is distracted by a pregnant woman selling necklaces and bracelets and other pretty things. She decides that she'd like a memento of the precious bauble her friend gave her and not to have all the money go to necessary things like food and cloth. She's captivated by an "exquisite comb" and the runes on it begin calling out to her, telling her how much she needs and wants it. Before she can make a horrible choice, she's distracted by her sister Friday and the girls move on.

Next, she's stopped by a fruit seller. Nothing looks quite as delicious as the basket of gorgeous red apples, which look perfect, even though they're out of season. The crone selling the fruit offers an apple to Sunday, but then her brother Trix crashes into something and causes a mess, distracting Sunday from the booth.

Finally, Sunday encounters a young shopgirl selling ribbons in every color imaginable. She and Friday buy all sorts of ribbons, and then the shopgirl offers a beautiful blue ribbon to Sunday as a gift. The ribbon had been displayed from the stall's roof in a special place, and matches Sunday's eyes perfectly. The shop girl fastens the ribbon around Sunday's neck, and it becomes Sunday's most precious memory of the day, and of her friend's precious gift. When Sunday arrives home, her Aunt Joy is there and recognizes the ribbon around Sunday's neck as being an enchanted one. She quickly destroys the ribbon before it can cause Sunday any harm.

Out of context, only the scene with the apple and the crone stands out, and even then, readers may not immediately think, "Hey, that apple's been poisoned!"

But with the three events arriving one after another and taking up the bulk of Sunday's attention at Market, they become important nods to the tale of Snow White and one more mash-up in Sunday Woodcutter's amazing life.

Why would anyone want to harm Sunday Woodcutter? You'll have to read ENCHANTED to find out!

One night Sunday kisses her frog goodbye and leaves, not realizing that her love has transformed him back into Rumbold, the crown prince of Arilland—and a man Sunday’s family despises.

The prince returns to his castle, intent on making Sunday fall in love with him as the man he is, not the frog he was. But Sunday is not so easy to woo. How can she feel such a strange, strong attraction for this prince she barely knows? And what twisted secrets lie hidden in his past - and hers?
